Name what is uncertain
Perhaps Thursday might involve dinner out, a late shift or one person eating elsewhere. Mark it undecided and choose when you will confirm it: Wednesday evening, for example.
Do not let “flexible” mean that one person silently becomes responsible for inventing dinner. Agree who will make the call and what they will check.
Keep an option, not a second basket
For a five-night stretch, you might buy for four chosen dinners and keep one existing pantry fallback available. That is four planned recipes, not five recipes plus a fallback.
If Thursday becomes a cooking night, check who is eating before assigning it a meal. Two people eating elsewhere should change the serving count, not merely the calendar label.
| Evening | Shopping decision |
|---|---|
| Monday to Wednesday | Buy the three accepted recipes |
| Thursday undecided | No dedicated fresh-ingredient basket yet |
| Friday confirmed | Buy the accepted Friday recipe |
Move meals with their ingredients
When a dinner moves, review perishable ingredients and package instructions before delaying their use. A blank calendar square is not a storage plan.
If Thursday stays free, leave it free. There is no prize for filling every square, especially when the people eating dinner have other plans.
