Bring two answers to the conversation
Each person names one dinner they’d like and one night they can handle cooking. Check the calendar before debating recipes.
For example: you pick Monday’s pasta and cook it; your partner picks Thursday’s tacos and handles that meal. Tuesday can be a familiar easy dinner you agree on.
Assign the whole job
“I’ll help” leaves the other person running the help desk. Be specific: who checks the ingredients, who shops, and who cooks?
If you’re shopping, check amounts before leaving. If you’re cooking, open the recipe before six o’clock. Agree who cleans up, too. Future you will appreciate the lack of negotiation.
Make next week slightly easier
After dinner, ask one useful question: would we have this again? Keep the answer somewhere both people can find it.
You don’t have to share every meal. Different schedules and appetites belong in the plan. Choose portions deliberately rather than cooking extra out of habit.
